How Much Should I Bank In-Season to Cover Off-Season Fixed Costs?
Enter your off-season length and fixed costs, and your in-season length. This shows how much to set aside each in-season month.
How this is calculated
Total off-season need is off-season fixed costs per month times the number of off-season months. Monthly savings needed divides that total across the in-season months. If in-season revenue per month is entered, savings are also shown as a percentage of that revenue.
Worked example
A 4-month off-season at $1,500 a month in fixed costs is $6,000 to cover. Spread across an 8-month season, that's $750 a month to set aside, 15% of $5,000 monthly revenue if that's what's typically brought in.
Frequently asked questions
Who is this calculator for?
Operators in a seasonal (typically northern) climate where revenue drops sharply or stops in the off-season, while fixed costs like insurance and loan payments continue year-round.
What counts as an off-season fixed cost?
Anything that continues whether or not you are generating revenue, insurance, equipment loan payments, storage, and similar. Exclude costs that pause with the season.
Does this calculator offer investment or savings advice?
No, it only does the arithmetic of dividing a known off-season cost across in-season months. Where and how to actually save the money is a decision outside this calculator's scope.
What if my business runs year-round?
This calculator is not relevant if there is no meaningful off-season, it exists specifically for operators with a real seasonal gap in revenue.
