Materials and Applications
How Much Seed Is Needed at This Application Rate?
Enter your treatment area and the seeding rate printed on the product label. This calculates the quantity needed, and bags plus cost if you know your bag size.
How this is calculated
Seed needed is treatment area divided by the label rate's basis (1,000 sq ft or one acre), multiplied by the label rate. If a bag size is entered, bags needed rounds up to the next whole bag, since you can't buy a fraction of one. Cost multiplies bags by the price per bag.
Worked example
A 5,000 sq ft overseed job with a product labeled at 4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft needs 20 lbs of seed. At a 7 lb bag size, that's 3 bags (rounding up from 2.86).
Frequently asked questions
Where do I get the label seeding rate?
From the seed bag itself. Labels typically list separate rates for new lawn establishment (higher) and overseeding an existing lawn (lower), use the one that matches the job.
Why is the overseed rate lower than the new-lawn rate?
An existing lawn already has turf coverage, overseeding fills gaps rather than establishing ground cover from bare soil, so it needs less seed per square foot.
Does this calculator recommend a seed type or rate?
No, seeding rates vary by grass species and blend, and are set by the product manufacturer. This calculator only does the area math from whatever rate you enter.
What if I am seeding a mix of sun and shade areas?
If the areas use different seed blends or rates, run this calculator once per area and add the results, rather than averaging two different rates together.
