Routes and Capacity

How Much of the Week Is Windshield Time, Not Billable Time?

Enter workdays, hours per day, and average service and drive time per stop. This splits a full week of route capacity into drive time and billable service time.

Next Decision

This reuses the same stop-capacity math as Weekly Route Capacity, use that calculator to see committed hours against total capacity, not just the drive-time split.

How this is calculated

Available weekly hours come from workdays times hours per day. Hours per stop is service time plus drive time, the same formula Weekly Route Capacity uses internally. Weekly stop capacity is available hours divided by hours per stop, rounded down. Total drive hours and total service hours are that stop count times each component, and drive time share is drive hours divided by the two combined.

Worked example

A 5-day, 8-hour week is 40 available hours. At 1 hour of service and 20 minutes of drive per stop, hours per stop is 1.33, fitting 30 stops. That is 30 hours of service and 10 hours of drive, so drive time is 25.0% of the time actually worked.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing drive time to total available hours instead of hours actually committed to stops.
  • Using a best-case drive estimate instead of a realistic average across the whole route.
  • Treating this as a live routing optimizer, it measures the current burden, it does not re-route stops.

Frequently asked questions

Is drive time billable?

Not directly, unless it is priced into the job. This calculator treats drive time as time consumed but not sold, which is why a high drive time share is worth knowing.

How is weekly stop capacity calculated here?

The same way Weekly Route Capacity calculates it, available weekly hours divided by hours per stop (service plus drive), rounded down to whole stops.

What would lower the drive time percentage?

Tighter routing (properties closer together), fewer but longer stops, or consolidating a spread-out route. This calculator shows the current burden, it does not model a specific routing change.

Does this account for traffic variation?

No, it uses a single average drive time per stop. Real days will vary, this is a planning estimate, not a live routing tool.
