How Much Pesticide or Herbicide Do I Need at This Application Rate?

Enter your treatment area and the rate printed on the product label. This calculates the quantity needed, and containers plus cost if you know your container size.

Next Decision

Working out fertilizer for the same property? See Fertilizer Application Rate.

How this is calculated

Product needed is treatment area divided by the label rate's basis (1,000 sq ft or one acre), multiplied by the label rate. If a container size is entered, containers needed rounds up to the next whole container, since you can't buy a fraction of one. Cost multiplies containers by the price per container.

Worked example

A 5,000 sq ft area with a product labeled at 2 oz per 1,000 sq ft needs 10 oz of product. At a 3 oz container size, that's 4 containers (rounding up from 3.33).

Frequently asked questions

Where do I get the label application rate?

From the product container itself, every labeled pesticide or herbicide states a rate, usually as an amount per 1,000 sq ft or per acre. This calculator does the area math, it never suggests a rate for you.

Why doesn't Grounds Toolkit just tell me how much to use?

Application rates are product-specific and regulated by the label. Using a generic default here could mean over- or under-applying a regulated chemical. Always use the rate printed on the product you actually have, and follow all label safety instructions.

Is this the same calculation as Fertilizer Application Rate?

Yes, the underlying area math is identical, area divided by the label rate's basis, times the rate. This is a separate page because "pesticide" and "herbicide" are their own distinct, commonly searched terms.

Does this account for mixing with water or a carrier?

No, this calculates product quantity only. Dilution and tank-mix ratios are a separate step, follow the product label's mixing instructions.
